According to Beyond Blue, one in eight Australian men will experience depression and one in five will experience anxiety at some stage in their lives. Men account for six out of every eight suicides every single day in Australia.
For many men, these are taboo issues which aren’t often talked about or acknowledged. But, whether we realise it or not, men’s mental health is an issue which touches us all. If we’re not experiencing mental health issues ourselves, then we certainly have mates who are. As brothers in Christ, it’s important that we’re not only informed about mental health issues, but that we’re equipped to support those among us who might be experiencing difficulties.
It’s for these reasons that I want to invite you to our first men’s event of 2020, where we’ll focus on the topic of men & mental health, with a particular focus on anxiety & depression. Our guest speaker will be Chris Cipollone, an Anglican minister and author of Down Not Out: Depression, Anxiety, and the Difference Jesus Makes. Chris is well placed to write and speak about these things, having lived with anxiety & depression for a number of years. We’re also planning to have a panel discussion made up of Chris, Dr Kevin Wong, a local GP, and a member of St Phil’s who will talk about their own journey with mental health issues. There’ll be plenty of time for questions, and of course food.
